4th Grade Committee Kicks Off

We had close to 30 parents in attendance at our kick-off meeting for the Class of 2018 4th Grade Committee.  After some quick introductions, co-chairs Debbie Forte and Krissy Fernandes gave a brief overview of what the committee is responsible for this year.
  • Plan social events for 4th Grade students throughout the year to allow them to celebrate with their classmates and solidify bonds before merging with the other area elementary schools at Wilson.
  • Design the 4th Grade yearbook and order copies for all 4th Grade students.
  • Design the 4th Grade class shirts and order them for all 4th Grade students.
  • Organize a service project for the 4th Grade class to help out our community.
  • Plan for the 4th Grade promotion ceremony at the end of the year (including programs, decorations and a video slideshow)
  • Present a Class Gift to leave behind for the benefit/enjoyment of future Ben-Hem students.
To accomplish all of these things, we need the help of all 4th Grade students and families to raise the funds to cover the cost (just under $9,000 for the year - ~$69/student).  Fundraising will be done through community events, bake sales, 4th Grade Social events and more.  

For those parents who do not have the flexibility of schedule to help with or attend these events, there is also the option to contribute to the budget by writing a check to "Ben-Hem PTO" with "4th Grade Committee" on the notes line.  Monetary contributions can be sent into school with your child or dropped off in the PTO mailbox outside the school.

One of the goals that we have for the committee this year is to get as much involvement and input from our 4th grade students and parents as possible.  We will be sending out surveys to both groups to better refine which activities and fundraisers to hold this year.  The ideas presented at the meeting were:

In addition to these great ideas, we are also planning on continuing the Movie Nights at Ben-Hem for the 4th Graders and Bake Sales at upcoming PTO events (Book Fair, Holiday Fair, Talent Show, Yard Sale).

Another fundraiser that was discussed was Soccer Coffee Stands at Ben-Hem for the next 6 weeks (skipping over Columbus Day weekend) where each class owns running on of them.  Everyone agreed to this plan and a schedule was outlined:

Owners for each class will reach out to their other class parents to arrange for other volunteers and pulling together food/drinks for sale.  What to sell is up to each class, however we decided that there needs to be coffee for sale each week to be consistent.  Also, rather than pricing each item, we will have a donation jar and ask people to pay what they can and make a donation to the Class of 2018.  

We have already gotten approval from the Health Department.  The only restriction is that we are unable to sell any perishable items (i.e. cheeses, meats, milk, etc).  A folding table has been left outside the custodial entrance to the school (to the left of the cafetorium) for use at these stands.  Owners are still needed for the final three days.  Please contact 4thgrade@benhempto.org if you can take this on.
